Your email address will not be published | Comments on Blogs

Why does "Your email address will not be published. Required fields are marked" being displayed in comments on blogs?

Have you come across a situation while commenting on blogs? The required fields are marked as "your email address will not be published."Bloggers that allow commenting may make use of this option in two prominent cases:

  1. They track the email addresses of their active customers and might provide them with a subscription, for instance.
  2. It is required to determine if the user isn't a bot and will not post spam comments.
  3. It means that you're writing to the owner of the website or administrator. That is also known as signing up for the newsletter on that website. Many times, when they commend you, the site, you will also be given time to sign up for the newsletter so that you can reread them.
  4. It also means that they won't give your personal information to any other third party.

Your email address will never be published or shared.

This kind of language, or a variation of it, is found in many WordPress themes. (In the example above, "never" is even in italics to highlight the importance. It's not surprising that on the blog on which this notice was posted (using a readily available theme), those who were not in agreement with the blog's author received their email addresses in responses by the blogger's author.

WordPress gives blog moderators an email address (and the IP address) of the users who post comments on their blog posts. The exact information that many themes claim that will not be shared is provided to the only person (or individuals) who can publish it to allow other readers to read.

How to remove  "YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS WILL NOT BE PUBLISHED. REQUIRED FIELDS ARE MARKED ?"

You might edit the functions.php code from above to include the title:

function change_up($fields) {

$fields['comment_notes_before'] = '<p class="comment-notes">YOUR TEXT HERE</p>';

$fields['title_reply'] = __( 'New Title' );

return $fields;

add_filter('comment_form_defaults','change_up');
